Paswome Scribbles: Dwarf Chameleon

Okay your probably thinking, 'Dwarf Chameleon',  obviously this thing is a shortie.  And guess what? You are right.  In fact, the Dwarf Chameleon 'Brookesia Minima' is one of the top ten smallest animals in the whole world! Their minuscule sizes have even been known to measure only half of an inch.  This chameleon has a flat head, triangular plates above its eyes, and its entire body is covered with scales, just like any other chameleon.

And the Winner is...

BLOBFISH!!! Recently, the British Science Festival in Newcastle announced blobfish to to be the ugliest creatures on the face of the earth.  Isn't it wonderful? Now just look at this beautiful description of the blobfish that Ms. Victoria Gill from BBC news gave:
'The grumpy-looking, gelatinous blobfish has won a public vote to become the official mascot of the Ugly Animal Preservation Society.'
Not only is the Blobfish famous, but it is now the official mascot of the Ugly Animal Preservation Society!  Many thanks to the UAPS from my fellow Blobfish friends.  In the big vote, the Blobfish topped some other extremely unsightly animals such as the proboscis monkey, the pig-nosed turtle (that's a pretty tough title to beat) and the amphibian well known as the scrotum frog.  To be more precise, the Blobfish won by over 10,00 votes.  Just think about it, 10,000 votes!  Hopefully, such an announcement will draw more attention to the Preservation and safety of unsightly animals.
As the Blobfish won the Ugly Animal Vote, it has also become the Ugly Animals Society mascot.  Now, I know for a fact that the Ugly Animals Preservation Society is not a very well known group of people, surprisingly, this is the first time I've ever even heard of them! I know, the Blobfish, the mighty Blobfish, hasn't known that the UAPS existed for the past 12 years! I have been living underneath a rock.  But I would like to advise YOU, the reader, to take a look at the UAPS (Ugly Animal Preservation Society) by checking out their website- http://uglyanimalsoc.com/

Also, I know that I have not been posting very frequently lately (this is for you, Glasswing Butterfly)- I, the Blobfish, pledge my allegiance to the Amazing Animals Society, that I will hereby from now on post at least once a week and keep up with the Pawsome Scribbles.  Are you happy now, Glasswing Butterfly?

It's hard to believe, but this is our fiftieth post. Our half-century. Wow.
I'll admit it, before there was another fiftieth post about a snake spotting of mine. I've un-published it. Pretend it didn't exist. It was a mistake. Don't worry, anonymous people in cyberspace, you'll still get that post, just as 51st. Understood? You'd better have.
But our fiftieth post we want to do something special. A celebration! So we've decided to do.... a Pawsome Scribbles. You'll be introduced to my fantastic drawing skills (yeah, right) and the Emu's patented technique of circles and sticks.
So, here it is:

BioBlitz

So, here's how it goes.  The Glasswing Butterfly and I have started organizing a Bioblitz in Singapore.  For those of you who don't know what a BioBlitz is, Google it.  Just kidding! A bioBlitz is a set place and time for people to gather and go looking for animals.  We have our place so far, but not the time- we'll post the time when everything is all planned out.  But first, we want to find out how many of you would like to come.  So I have created this survey that I'd really like you readers to fill out.  This document is only for people who are living in Singapore. No, not Zimbabwe, not the White House, just good old fashioned Singapore.  Here's the form:

Dumbo Octopus

Now you're probably thinking, 'Dumbo Octopus? This thing's an idiot!' So first of all, the reason they call this octopus 'Dumbo', is because he swims with his ears! Isn't he cute. Disgusting. But the thing I like about this creature is that it swallows its food whole. The 20 cm Dumbo Octopus eats worms, crustaceans, and bivalves of the sea.  It lives about 7000 meters under the surface of the ocean. Pretty deep.

The Blobfish - Psychrolutes Marcidus

Hello readers, I'm back with more facts about our animal pseudonyms. Next up, the Blobfish!
  1. The density of a blobfish’s flesh is slightly less than water’s, allowing it to float underwater without needing to use energy to swim.
  2. If it’s taken out of the water, it dries out completely.
  3. The blobfish doesn’t hunt, it waits for food particles to float by, then sucks them in.
  4. It is inedible and has no predators, but are endangered by overfishing of other deep sea creatures.
  5. It has almost no muscles in its body.
  6. THERE IS NOTHING ABOUT BLOBFISH ON THE INTERNET
  7. OR ANYWHERE ELSE???
  8. ?!??
  9. !!!
  10. !?
  11. blobfish yo

Pawsome Scribbles: 4 (Inspiration)

Okay okay, I know that this is not a normal Pawsome Scribble.  And I know that most of you don't even know what this drawing is.  Well... it's an abstract lion.  A lot of people have asked me, "Where the heck did you get that idea?" To tell you the truth, I got this idea in the shower.  You know how the glass fogs up and you can use your finger to draw on it?  One day I rubbed my arm against the side of it and- wah-lah! I had a lion's face!  I'm serious, I did not make this up.
So if you guys have any inspiration to draw something, please please pleeeeaaaaaase send it to amazinganimalssociety@gmail.com.  PLEASE!  So far only mine have been posted (though I have to admit, they are pretty good).

Pawsome Scribbles: 3

Alright people, this is the Blobfish here.  I'm not sure if everyone knows this but ostriches are stupid.  In fact, the ostriches brain is the same size as his eyeball. About the size of a golfball. And a human's brain is the size of their two fists put together.  And I'm not going to mention the size of a blobfish's brain (no reasons, just not telling).
Hope you guys enjoyed my little cartoon!

Middlemist Camelia/ Middlemist Red: Rarest Flower in the World

Here we have it folks, the rarest flower in the world:
So, maybe my start to this post was a little random... and abrupt... and strange... but whatever!  I'm trying to tell you about the rarest flower in the whole world!
This flower has two names: Middlemist Red or Middlemist Camellia.  Since I prefer Middlemist Camelia, I'll be calling it that.  There are only two known examples of this flower: one in the UK and the other is in New Zealand.  Ok, flowers.  Blegh.  This is SOOO the Glasswing Butterfly's kind of topic.  Flowers, butterflies... gross.  But I've decided to do something different.  I've decided to talk about flowers.
The first of this  plant was collected in China by a man by the name of John Middlemist.  And therefore, he named the plant after himself.  John did so in the year, 1804.  He gave it to the Kew Gardens which is in Southwest London, England.  From there, it has vanished.  But in 1823, a descendant of this flower was found in the camellia collection of the sixth Duke of Devonshire.  This flower finally ended up in the Chiswick house of London, England.
Of the second flower in New Zealand, I know nothing about.  For that, you will have to find out yourself.

Pawsome Scribbles: 2

In case you readers weren't sure, this is a Giant Squid.  Giant Squids have rarely ever been seen.  Though they have eight tentacles, I have mistakenly drawn 10 tentacles on this squid.  One of the most interesting and well known facts about Giant Squids is that their only predator is the Sperm Whale.  In fourth grade I made a presentation and study on Sperm Whales for a class project.  Unfortunately I have forgotten almost everything in fourth grade so I am unable to help you with facts about Sperm Whales.  They are 20-45 feet long.  Yes, that is a very long range.  But all the same, these squids are gigantic.

Pawsome Scribbles

Hello, everyone.  The Glasswing Butterfly and I have decided to make a new page for you: Pawsome Scribbles.  In other words, drawing of the week.  So we'd be happy if you could send in a pawsome scribble to this email adress: amazinganimalssociety@gmail.com.  And here we have it, the first Pawsome Scribble ever to be created:

Please Don't Crush Me

Okay, okay, I now.  I've been pretty lazy lately.  I haven't written a lot of posts.  But give me some credit!  The Glasswing Butterfly is OBSESSED with writing posts.  I wanted to tell you about something very simple.  Something very boring.  Something very common.  Ants.  There are one million ants for every human in the world. These creatures also never sleep and do not have lungs.  Imagine that!  No sleep.  My God, I would die!  How can these ants survive?
So imagine being a worker ant.  Your mother is the queen of the colony.  (Usually, the queen is the mother of ALL of the ants in the colony).  Everyday you march out your anthill, gather food, dodge human swatting and stomping (most of them don't survive), come back home, and share it with everyone else.  Now that is what I call a tough life.  I'm telling you folks right now.  I am here, and I am giving the ants a voice.

I can't deny that ants are pretty annoying.  And no, they aren't anywhere NEAR extinction.  But guess how animals actually become extinct.  We crush them.  We take their homes, we eat their meat, we even take their FUR.  And after a little while of this, poof!  There goes another species.
So maybe this blog post isn't just about ants.  In truth, I'm just trying to get out to all of you people out there that don't just protect nearly extinct animals, protect the survivors.  Now, don't turn all of your focus onto the existing species, but take into care the fact that someday they may not be there.

She Needs Her Fur More Than YOU Do

"In a meat-eating world, wearing leather for shoes and clothes and even handbags, the discussion of fur is childish."

          -Karl Lagerfeld                           '

THIS QUOTE ROCKS!!!!  Sorry, readers, I just had a mental breakdown (I pulled out some hair, kicked some chairs, you know the usual stuff).  So, I was wondering- do YOU wear fur.  Because if you do I'm going to RIP OF YOUR HEAD, SHOVE IT DOWN THE SEWER- my friend says that I'm being too angry.  Maybe a little bit.  But either way, angry or not, I am passionate about this topic.  How can you let someone club an animal to death, skin it, turn the fur into a coat, and then actually WEAR it.  It's insanity!  Imagine this.  Animals (no- humans aren't considered animals in this story) are smarter than humans.  They are the ones who wash the dishes, eat with forks and knives, drink coca-cola, and most importantly- wear clothes.  Now imagine that YOU are the one who is beaten, skinned, turned into a coat, and then worn by a fox!  Eat THAT- Fur wearers (if you don't wear fur then none of these angry comments apply to you).

But the truth is, I am begging you.  Don't wear fur!  It just isn't humane.

WOLVERINE!

Only recently did I find out that Wolverines aren't just superheroes.  And if you didn't know, well then- they aren't.  Wolverines are on the Endangered Species List as there are very few left (the exact number is unknown).  So, why should we care?  Why should we care about vicious animals that can kill creatures three times their size?  Because, they are OUR problem.  It's humans who've made this mess.  I know this makes no sense, so let me talk you through it.  Why are they endangered?  Because there aren't many of them.  Why aren't there many?  Because many were killed.  Why were they killed?  Because humans want their fur, that's why!  So it doesn't really matter whether or not they scare you, it is our job to preserve their lives.  Besides, no human has ever actually been killed by a wolverine.

Here's a problem: how are YOU supposed to help?  Well, you can help out by spreading awareness and telling your friends not to by wolverine fur, or any animal fur at all.

Project Noah

One of the links that everyone in this world should know about is projectnoah.org.  Even though all SAS students get an account when they go into 7th grade, you should still check it out.  On Project Noah, you post pictures of different animals and bugs that you have spotted.  Then people can help you find out the species, favorite your pics, and do tons of other cool stuff.  It's like an animal Instagram, just better.  Here are some of the pics that the Glasswing Butterfly and I have taken:

Painted Jezebel (The Blobfish):

Mating Dragonflies (The Blobfish):

Common Lime Butterfly (The Glasswing Butterfly):

Juvenile Yello- Vented Bulbul (Glasswing Butterfly):

So if you want to experience all of these animals and open your eyes to a whole new world, then feel free to join Project Noah (I suggest taking pictures of UGLY animals- that ought to attract some people's attention).  By the way- my projectnoah account is: turqouisekillerwhale. Hope you guys enjoyed these pictures.  Go uglies!

The Blobfish

Ok guys.  One of the things that you all are probably going to notice that we keep ending our posts with things like 'The Glasswing Butterfly' or 'The Blobfish' etc. These are the society's members' titles.  What I'm trying to  share with you is my title 'The Blobfish.' The first thing you should be doing right now is googling it. Google 'blobfish.' But since I know that the entire human race is EXTREMELY lazy, I'll do it for you, like the good blobfish I am.  Here's what a blobfish looks like:

Now, why did I choose the Blobfish?  Not only do they have an awesome poker face and are super chubby, but... yes you guessed it (just kidding, humans aren't that smart) they are ugly!  Yes, they are ugly!  I want an ugly animal, because I want everyone to stop focusing on just the pretty animals.  Come on, what's so great about a fragile butterfly when a blobfish can make millions of girls puke (and a handful of boys too).  And did you guys ever think that maybe blobfish think that HUMANS are the ugly ones!  It's possible.
So, I'm posting this to tell all of you guys out there that you should support ugly and creepy animals as much as pretty animals.
